Bohemian Rhapsody At Lincoln Center: Step Inside The Whimsical Realm Of Ulla

Ulla Johnson leads us once again on a soul-searching, intuitive journey woven together with layers of warm textiles, lace appliqués, handkerchief-hems, and combat boots. This time she exhibits her fashion threads inside the storied walls of Lincoln Center and introduces some much-needed pomp and circumstance back into our hermit-Covid existence.

Finding her influence through the 1970s and ’80s, Ulla is a girl after our own hearts, showing off the art of pattern mixing and allowing us to dream freely of lavish nights out on big city streets in layers upon layers of luscious textiles. In our own, perhaps, smaller-scaled closets, we are fully prepared to make space for all-things-Ulla, especially after taking in this sumptuous Fall-Winter 2021/2022 Ready-to-Wear Collection. After a year of wearing sweatpants, leggings and bathrobes, we’re ready for layers of a different kind—the chic kind. Ulla’s latest collection connects us back to the past while keeping a romantic eye toward the future. Browse through hourglass silhouettes, free-flowing skirts, second-skin fabrics, and muted tones—suddenly and collectively, we can’t wait for summer to be over.

And we couldn’t miss an opportunity to share a peek inside the fashion designer’s bohemian Brooklyn brownstone that’s every bit as layered as her Fall/Winter collection. Preferring to work with like-minded women, Ulla ushered in Elizabeth Roberts and Alexis Brown, who had previously worked alongside Ulla on her Bleeker Street storefront. Ulla’s love of textiles and material eclecticism are romantically expressed in every room of the inviting home. While renovations were not completely out of the question in the remodeling process, it was important for Ulla and her husband to maintain the brownstone’s historic bones. Little fixes here, little touches there, and a simple solarium wall that kicks back two feet off the parlor room to welcome in warm natural light. As a young, contemporary couple, they stayed true to their effervescent style but still remain highly sophisticated as seen in the blush marble kitchen island—a serious swoon-worthy moment! We know what you’re thinking. “She’s Ulla Johnson—get to the part about her walk-in closet!” Well, the cabinets feature stenciled African-inspired art—a truly unique touch that Ulla holds dear to her heart. Oh, and it’s a big closet.
