“I create sculptures using mindfully-sourced materials from nature: wood, ceramics,
stone, and natural fibers. My approach to art stems from this love of nature and
movement as well as a deep curiosity about form, texture, and minimalism.”

The hanging sculptures made with intention and care by Los Angeles-based artist Cindy Hsu Zell impart a subtle magic into any interior they reside within. Formed from hand-spun ropes in fashion-forward hues met by handcrafted ceramics made in collaboration with another Los Angeles-based artist Alyson Iwamoto, Cindy’s works are designed to honor materiality first and foremost. The artist’s deep curiosity for the natural world and her reverence for texture and material have informed these minimalist sculptures steeped in mindful, quality craftsmanship. A selection of these beauties are currently on display at L.A. gallery In Various Forms—a space created to capture the attention of the modern collector.

My technique for spinning and dying rope is a careful and meditative process that results in a contrast between the softness of the fibers and the tension required to hold it all together. I find it fascinating that twisting something makes it exponentially stronger.
